BIO

Masha Solus is a watercolor artist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Originally from Moscow, Russia, she trained at the Russian State University of A. N. Kosygin, specializing in art, design, and technology. Having lived in Russia, Israel, and the U.S., her multicultural background profoundly informs her work, which explores themes of native plant ecologies, subjective reality, and the histories of family illness.

Masha’s watercolors strike a balance between control and spontaneity. She allows the wet pigments to flow freely while subtly guiding the form, creating pieces that are both meticulously rendered and abstract. This tension between precision and fluidity is reflected in her work, with textured, organic surfaces juxtaposed against detailed renderings of people and nature, mirroring the complexity of human perception.

Now based in Pittsburgh with her husband and daughter, Masha continues to evolve as an artist, delving into themes of inversion and reimagining the order of things. Since 2022, she has distanced herself from academic traditions, embracing a more experimental and intuitive approach to her practice.
